Colorado Rockies 2025 Season Update #1

Well, we’re back. We’re back to losing just about every game. We’re back to being at the bottom of the stat categories. We’re back to being the laughing stock of the league, and there won’t be a change any time soon. What did the Rockies fans do to deserve a team and management like this?
If you’re reading this article, you know how bad this Rockies team is. A 6-33 record after 39 games is the worst record to start an MLB season since the 1988 Baltimore Orioles did the same thing. The only difference between those two is that the Orioles started 0-21 and had only 107 losses that year. The Rockies are currently on pace for 137. That would be a new MLB record for the worst season in the 146 years of the MLB, and the worst record in the modern MLB, 16 games worse than the Chicago White Sox of 2024. The Rox are currently on their third eight-game losing streak of the season, marking the first time in franchise history, and we're only 24% into the season. The ceiling is low, and the glass floor is even lower. Every time we hit a rock bottom, it feels like we’re never actually hitting rock bottom. There always seems to be something else to knock our spirits even lower.
Rockies @ Rays March 28-30: Rays Win Series 2-1 RD -2
After blowing a two-run lead and giving up a walk-off home run in game #1, the Rockies won game #2 before the bullpen blew game #3 with four earned runs in three innings. The starters exited this series with only two earned runs and only four runs of support from the offense. The starting rotation had a 1.18 ERA to begin the season while the bullpen had an 8.10 ERA. On the bright side, Ryan McMahon went 3-3 in game #1, but he did go 1-8 to end the series.
Rockies Top Performer: Kyle Freeland, 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 7 K, 67 pitches with 53 strikes.
Rockies Worst Performer: The Bullpen 9.2 IP, 12 H, 8 ER, 7 K, 3 BB, 8.10 ERA
Rockies @ Phillies March 31- April 3 Phillies Sweep Series 3-0 RD -11
These were all winnable games. Leading in the sixth during game #1, down one in the seventh during game #2, and tying runs on in the ninth with no outs in game #3. The offense just couldn’t capitalize. The rotation stayed hot with only three earned runs, but the bullpen continued to play spoiler.
Rockies Top Performer: Hunter Goodman 3-9, 2 HR, 2 BB, 3 RBI, 3 R, 3 XBH and a .666 OBP.
Rockies Worst Performer: Michael Toglia 1-12, 8 SO, and ended that series with a season .087 AVG.
Athletics @ Rockies April 4-6 Athletics Wins Series 2-1 RD +1
This series saw the first real offensive success for the Rockies. Playing at Coors doesn’t hurt, but getting back to playing night games mixed with home cooking doesn’t hurt. The Rox lost game #1 in 11 innings following a guy on third with one out in the 10th (not to mention loaded bases with two outs), and the tying run at the plate with no outs in the 11th with the top of the lineup coming up. Game #2 saw another bullpen masterclass with two home runs in the seventh. Game #3 saw the first Rockies taco’s of 2025 with a 12-5 win, ending a six-game losing streak.
Rockies Top Performer: Ezequiel Tovar 8-15, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 4 R, and a 1.429 OPS.
Rockies Worst Performer: Hunter Goodman 1-14, 2 RBI, 3 K.
Brewers @ Rockies April 8-10 Brewers Win Series 2-1 RD -16
Well, the Brewers came in and handed the Rockies their first double-digit loss of the season with a 17-2 win in game #2. Senzatela got rocked on paper, but outside of two hits in the third and one in the fifth, Senza gave up five softly hit singles, three of which were infield hits. The Rockies got outscored 24-3 in the first two games before winning game #3 by a score of 7-2.
Rockies Top Performer: Brenton Doyle 6-12, 3 R, 7 RBI, 2 HR, and a 1.622 OPS.
Rockies Worst Performer: Jacob Stallings 0-6, 6 SO. Yes, you read that right.
Rockies @ Padres April 11-13 Padres Sweep Series 3-0 RD -16
Here begins one of, if not the worst, streaks in Rockies history: three straight shutouts, nine hits, and three errors. The Rockies never had a player on third to begin an at bat, and they only had three RISP due to three separate doubles, all by Kyle Farmer. The 34-year-old Farmer had over 50% of the team hits in this series! A 34-year-old! To say nothing worked would be an understatement.
Rockies Top Performer: Kyle Farmer 5-10, 3 XBH, and a .400 OBP.
Rockies Worst Performer: The Rest of the Offense 4-80, 4 H, 30 K, .050 AVG, and a .075 OBP.
Rockies @ Dodgers April 14-16 Dodgers Sweep Series 3-0 RD -7
The scoring drought continued into the Dodgers series, with the first Rockies run coming after a franchise record 32.2 innings in the sixth inning, thanks to a Farmer double. It really didn’t matter, though, because even with a Rockies taco’s in game #3, a seven-run first for LA gave them an 8-7 win. For anyone wondering, Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman hit four combined homers. They did, however, go for a combined 2-12 in game #2 with Ohtani and Betts not recording a hit.
Rockies Top Performer: The Bullpen 13.1 IP, 9 H, 9 BB, 15 K, and only 2 ER.
Rockies Worst Performer: Ezequiel Tovar 0-8. Tovar has not played a game since game #2 on April 15th due to a hip injury. He will be rehabbing in Albuquerque the week of May 11th.
Nationals @ Rockies April 18-20 Nationals Win Series 2-1 RD 0
The Rockies tried to end their losing streak with an eight-run inning in game #1, but they came up 90 feet away from tying the game in the ninth. Both Zac Veen and Braxton Fulford hit their first career home runs in game #2, but everyone else decided not to show up again. Game #3 finally saw the eight-game losing streak end with a 3-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader. Even though we scored a season high of 16 runs in the series, Washington matched that with 16 of their own and two one-run victories.
Rockies Top Performer: The Bullpen 15 IP, 8 H, 7 BB, 14 K, 3 ER.
Rockies Worst Performer: Ryan McMahon 1-9, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K.
Rockies @ Royals April 22-24 Royals Sweep Series 3-0 RD -8
The Rockies fought back with a bases-clearing double from Jacob Stallings with two strikes and two outs in the ninth inning to take a 3-2 lead. However, two RISP with one out in the 10th and two runners on with no outs in the 11th both turned into nothing, and the Rockies got walked off with a bases-loaded single in the 11th. The bats struggled in game #2, and Chase Dollander couldn’t hold it in Game #3, and the Rockies got swept again.
Rockies Top Performer: Jordan Beck 4-8, 3 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, and Ryan Feltnar 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 ER.
Rockies Worst Performer: Ryan McMahon 0-11, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K IP, and an OBP of .272.
Reds @ Rockies April 25-27 Reds Sweep Series 3-0 RD -10
Another forgettable series with the Reds sweeping the Rockies. The Rockies were swept five times through their first nine series, and 50% overall throughout the end of April. There really isn’t anything to talk about in this series. It was a regular 2025 Rockies series—a close one-run game, and then no hits in the other two games. The rotation continued to get hit, but that was really it.
Rockies Top Performer: Jordan Beck 3-10, 2 HR, 3 RBI.
Rockies Worst Performer: Starting Rotation 13.1 IP, 25 H, 3 BB, 9 K, 16 ER.
Braves @ Rockies April 28-30 Braves Win Series 2-1 RD -7
The Rockies ended another eight-game losing streak in game #3, finally winning their fifth game of the season. It took 30 games. A three-run bomb from Goodman was the only offense for the Rox in game #1, and two Toglia RBIs in game #2 was all she wrote there. Game #3 saw a 2-1 Rockies victory with the game-winning hit coming from a solo blast in the third inning from Brenton Doyle. Pitching was outstanding and gave up only three hits and six baserunners. The Rockies ended April with a 5-25 record and a win.
Rockies Top Performer: The Bullpen, 11.1 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 ER.
Rockies Worst Performer: Brenton Doyle 2-13, 2 XBH, 4 K, and Ryan McMahon 0-7 with 3 K.
This month couldn’t have been much worse than what we saw. Multiple blowouts, five sweeps, and a stretch of 32.2 innings without a run. Morale dropped like the Rockies in the power rankings since 2018. On April 17th, the Rockies announced that Clint Hurdle will take over for Hensley Mullins as hitting coach. This move came after the disastrous California road trip. Here’s a weird stat just because I feel like it. When the Rockies were 26 games in, they had fewer wins (4) than there are vowels in the alphabet (5). There are 26 letters in the alphabet, just in case anyone was wondering. There’s not much else to say other than please, please fire Bud Black and Sell The Team! There’s nothing else happening this season, why not try to hit a reset button?
So why am I writing this article? Well, it seems that I like pain and furthering something called depression. I’m also going for the “I Watched Every Single 2025 Rockies Game Award” because I can, and why not? I’ll see you again in June, where we get to talk about the atrocity that was the 21-0 loss to the Padres. See you then.
A quick note here. Jordan Beck became the second player in MLB history to have his first 5 HR of a season all come in a span of two days, joining Ty Cobb from May 5-6, 1925. Beck was also the first Rockie in franchise history to hit 5 HR in two days, and the first Major Leaguer to do so since Jose Altuve on Sept. 2-3, 2023. He also became the 3rd Rockie to record back-to-back multi-home run games, joining Carlos González, who did it twice in 2015, and Vinny Castilla, who did it in 1995. Pretty good stuff from the young kid who spent two weeks in the minors leading up to this streak.
