There’s no doubt that the Rockies’ first series against the reigning National League champion Diamondbacks was frustrating. Some pitching and the positional defense delivered a lot of the blows we witnessed, but even after just one series of baseball, there are some positive takeaways and many young Colorado players that showed what they are capable of. So here’s a list of Rockies that we could see get All-Star votes this year.
Nolan Jones was able to reach 4th in Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, even having spent time in Triple-A and only playing in 106 major league games. He accomplished this by hitting 20 homers, stealing 20 bags, all while getting on base nearly 39% of the time (league average being 32%). Spending most of his time in left and right field, Nolan showed that he would best be in LF, throwing out 11 runners in just 56 games started out there. At any rate, a full season of this production at this level is guaranteed MVP votes, that said Jones is suddenly a favorite for the All-Star game!
Ezequiel Tovar was recently extended this spring to a 7+ year deal for over 80 million. The Rockies’ front office went and locked down their guy, which fans are happy about. Tovar provides sneaky pop with great plate coverage, but his biggest tool is his quick hands and defensive ability. He won’t even need to have amazing offensive production to make himself All-Star caliber. At the age of 22, Ezequiel has a bright future with the organization and it will be exciting to see the Rockies develop yet another cornerstone at shortstop.
Justin Lawrence is one of the most electric pitchers to watch in all of baseball. Formerly touching 102 MPH with movement from a near submarine release point, and a wicked sweeping slider that often makes his opponents look silly, he’ll be a closer that all baseball fans will want to see in the All-Star game. The Rockies officially moved him to the closing role for this season, which gives Justin the opportunity to rack up saves and hopefully more strikeouts. There's a good shot that Lawrence could make an All-Star appearance with all these factors.
Ryan McMahon has shown some swing and stance adjustments that were pointed out by Rockies beat reporter Thomas Harding at MLB on March 22nd. McMahon has expressed that he wants to lower his swing and miss, which is a great way of maximizing his elite plate discipline. He saw an average of 4.37 pitches per at bat in 2023, which was good for 1st in the league. Ryan’s ability to consistently get deep into counts is clear, and could make a world of difference if he cuts down his swing and miss rate. With Gold Glove defense at 3rd base for three straight seasons, and a productive Spring Training, Ry-Mac could make his first All-Star Game this year.
There are plenty of honorable mentions as well. Blackmon could go on another tear, Kris Bryant could prove the baseball world wrong, and Elehuris Montero has shown good plate vision to start the season. With all their textbook swings that generate power, if they start seeing that ball well while staying healthy, anything is possible. All fans were rooting for Kyle Freeland after looking great in spring, but unfortunately fell apart in the home opener. There are a few hard throwing bullpen arms that the Rockies could send to Arlington, TX for All-Star week. Such as Nick Mears, Jalen Beeks, Victor Vodnik, Tyler Kinley, and Peter Lambert who all have promising stuff and are off to a scoreless start after the opening 4-game series in Arizona. It will be intriguing to see who represents Colorado this year at the break, especially because there’s a good chance it’ll be one, if not multiple who've yet to be voted in. Especially if they're deserving, make sure to cheer on our guys and flood them with votes when the polls open!
