Rockies Rake Series Opener From Yankees

Most Rockies fans, myself included, likely were prepared for the worst with the Yankees coming to town this weekend. The team has struggled to put together a complete game so far this season, with either the pitching taking a nose dive or the offense disappearing, and in some cases, neither has shown up at all.

With Dollander hitting the IL, Tanner Gordon got the call up and absolutely delivered, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits over 6 innings. With a solid defensive showing behind him and Ryan McMahon’s key double in the 5th, fans were finally treated to a solid, complete, well-played game. Tovar and Beck continue to be a steady offensive presence, each going 2-4 tonight. The bottom half of the lineup struggled, collectively going 2-15, thanks to 2 hits from Kyle Farmer. Now, was this win a turning point? No, it absolutely wasn’t. It was a step in the right direction, though.

I recently saw Warren Schaeffer say, “Opportunity abounds” in the Rockies' current situation. This was an opportunity for the team to play hard and prove to themselves they can put a solid game together, and they did just that. What I’ve seen on the field in the last couple days has restored a little bit of faith in this roster.

With the mighty Max Fried taking the mound for the Yankees tomorrow, it’ll be a tough one for the Rockies offense. Kyle Freeland will have to be on top of his game, and the defense will absolutely have to be on theirs. Will we finally see double digits in the win column? A first series win? Here’s hoping the Yankees fans go home unhappy.
