After a few weeks into the Rockies 2024 Spring Training, they made some moves that made the Opening Day roster clearer. Starting with the first round of options coming on March 3rd, they sent down three players, none of whom were pitchers. A couple of players have made a big splash this spring and could find their way to a roster spot. Players like Drew Romo, Jordan Beck, Aaron Schunk, and Michael Toglia, who have all combined for 30 hits this spring.
The 2025 hopeful and current 18th overall prospect Warming Bernabel was sent to AA Hartford after getting just seven at bats in four games. He had three hits in his first four at bats while driving in two, but was hitless in his final three at bats. It was a very quick spring for Bernabel, and we’ll be watching his progress in the minors this year, where he hopefully finds his way to Albuquerque.
Young third baseman Kyle Karros broke the top 30 Rockies prospect list a few days after being sent to Low-A Fresno. He played in only one game going 1-2 with a K. He’s projected for 2026, so he has a long way to go.
The 2018 636th overall pick Hunter Stovall was sent back to AAA Albuquerque after not recording an AB and only entering one game.
From March 7th-12th, the Rockies have reassigned 13 players, including two of their top three prospects.
Stephen Jones did not enter a game and has been sent down to AAA.
RHP Noah Davis was sent down to AAA after pitching six innings through three games. He gave up four runs on 10 hits, with five K’s and three walks. He will start with the Isotopes, and will likely find his way back to the MLB later this year.
Juan Mejia pitched 2.2 innings through three games before returning to AA Hartford. He gave up two runs on two hits, along with two walks and 2 K’s. At the age of 23, he’s looking really good.
The Rockies #3 prospect Yanquiel Fernandez played in seven games, having 13 AB with three hits and a home run. He walked once and struck out three times, and will start in AA with the Yard Goats with a projected 2025 call-up.
Adael Amador, the Rockies #1 prospect, played in 11 games before being sent to AA. In those 11 games, he had 14 AB with three hits and two RBI’s. He walked and struck out four times, and made some great plays in the field. He is also projected for 2025.
RHP Gavin Hollowell spent a good amount of July and September in the majors last year, but struggled in Spring Training this year. He will start in Albuquerque, but will most likely make his way back to Blake St.
Riley Pint made his MLB debut last year getting only one out, walking three, and giving up an RBI double. That game came in the middle of May though, and has made some big strides this spring. Through six innings, he’s given up two hits, four walks, and no runs with five K’s. He could possibly be seen in the majors after starting the season in AAA.
The Rockies #12 prospect Hunter Goodman was sent to AAA after having another rough spring at the plate this year. However, in the minors last year, he hit 34 bombs in 106 games while driving in 111, so we know he can hit. He could still use some seasoning in Albuquerque before returning to the Rockies, but he has his path and he will be able to take advantage of it.
First baseman Kyle Datres and SS Julio Carreras were sent to AAA, RF Niko Decolati, RHP Angel Chivilli, and RHP Dylan Spain were sent to AA, while CF Braiden Ward and 2B Nic Kent were sent to A Spokane.
With the Spring Breakout this weekend, this will be another great look at the young Rockies players, including some of the names mentioned above. As of today, 15 of the top 16 Rockies prospects will be playing the Diamondbacks prospects in the first ever Spring Breakout, and they will be showcased at 5:10 PM Mountain time (7:10 PM ET) on MLB Network and Rockies.TV. As Opening Day nears, the hype for baseball expands, and we are another day closer to firing up the fountains!
